MINDGAMES

Mindgames project is searching for a game designer/builder

MINDGAMES FI/UK is a new project exploring mental health through gaming. Participants will be young men (including trans and non-binary individuals). It will reflect on similarities and differences in their experiences of growing up in Manchester and Finland. We are searching for a game designer/builder to work with as creative lead on the project.

The Concept:

The project will bring together 5 participants from Manchester (UK) and 5 from Finland to explore their experiences of mental health, to develop new digital skills and to work together to create a first playable prototype of a video game that will have a positive impact on the mental health of people who play it. The project will be developed through a series of online creative workshops and, if possible, through physical exchange trips between the two countries. The prototype of the resulting game will be presented as part of a Mental Health Arcade during SICK! Festival in Manchester in Spring 2022.

Creative Lead

We are seeking a skilled and engaging game designer from or living in Finland to work closely with the SICK! Festival team as creative lead on the project. The creative lead will help the participants to imagine, develop and create a first playable working prototype responding to their experiences of mental health. They will work with us to develop a programme of creative digital workshops that explore the possible relationships between gaming and mental health. These workshops will also introduce participants to the creative skills involved in game design and development such as visual design, audio and sound composition, FX design, programming, narrative development and gameplay.

The Creative Lead will:

  • Be from or live in Finland
  • Have experience of designing video games
  • Have experience of delivering workshops
  • Have lived experience of mental health challenges, either through personal experience or that of family, friends or colleagues
  • Have good spoken English

We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants under the age of 35, but will consider all applications.

We expect that the role would begin in May 2021.

If you are interested, please send us an application incorporating:

  • Professional CV
  • Links to 3 relevant projects
  • A summary of why you are interested in this project (Max. 2 sides of A4; or a short video, Max. 3 mins)
